Wildcraft Wednesday: New England Sunflower

Standing tall in Wisconsin prairies and roadsides this week, New England Sunflowers shine like golden beacons of late summer. Their bright blooms aren’t just beautiful — they’re a vital stopover for pollinators.
Why it matters to pollinators
Bees, butterflies, and even migrating monarchs fuel up on the nectar and pollen of these wild sunflowers, making them a cornerstone of our late-season landscape. When you see a stand in bloom, you’re looking at an active refueling station for the insects that keep our ecosystems thriving.
Identification & habitat
- Form: Often 4–8 feet tall with branching stems and multiple flower heads.
- Flowers: Golden-yellow rays with darker centers, blooming in clusters.
- Leaves: Rough, sandpapery texture; opposite to alternate up the stem.
- Where to look: Sunny prairies, field margins, ditches, and roadsides across Wisconsin.

Common, traditional uses (educational)
Historically, different parts of wild sunflowers were used by Indigenous peoples for practical needs — such as crafting fiber from stalks and preparing mild teas from leaves. Today, their most important role is ecological: feeding pollinators and wildlife while marking the turn of the season.
What “wildcrafting” means to us
Wildcrafting is the practice of noticing what grows around us, learning from it, and honoring the ways plants sustain both people and the natural world. At Everwood Botanicals, we draw inspiration from resilient, generous plants like New England Sunflower — deeply rooted in Wisconsin soil.
Seen any stands of wild sunflowers on your walks or drives this week? Share a photo or your favorite spot — we love seeing your Wisconsin finds.
